The phaser defined the sound itself of the 80’s, with bands like Van Halen, but has its legacy stopped today?
In this article we’ll see songs that still make a glourious use of this little modulation pedal!
1. TAME IMPALA – ENDORS TOI
This song from the rising (well, in fact he’s already well known and for good reasons) solist project named “Tame Impala”, all managed by multi-instrumentalist Kevin Parker, well except for the musicans on stage of his concert where Kevin can’t (still) duplicate himself and play everything.
In all of his songs are heavily used lots of modulations and therefore also phasers: below you can hear “Endors Toi”, that is a delirium of modulation and mostly instrumental-focused rather than vocals focused compared to most of his other songs.
2. THE BLACK KEYS – TIGHTEN UP
Another modern song with a great use of the modulation effect is “Tighten Up” by the Black Keys, (actually, only the final solo, but still…), and you can hear that in the video below (play start and it’ll be shown as I’ve set the beginning timeframe right when the solo starts, sadly that actually is the same moment when the drummer Patrick Carney clearly shows his middle finger…)
3. INCUBUS – NICE TO KNOW YOU
Another classic from 2001, this song has modulations put through the whole song.
4. COLDPLAY – DON’T PANIC
Coldplay might not be the first name that comes to mind when thinking about this peculiar effect pedal, but “Don’t Panic” definitely is one of those songs with a great use of it!
5. LENNY KRAVITZ – ARE YOU GONNA GO MY WAY
Another great classic from 2011, this song mixes an (over)driven energic feel to some really good phased guitar parts: you can hear by yourself hearing the song below!
